Every Drop of Water Matters
In rural communities where agriculture depends heavily on rainfall, water scarcity can threaten crops, household nutrition, and family income. In the tribal villages of Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, conserving rainwater is an important step towards building climate resilience and improving rural livelihoods.
The Swapneswar Water Harvesting Structure (WHS), constructed at Mahulpankha village in Kaptipada Block, demonstrates how a single community water conservation initiative can create multiple benefits. From protecting paddy crops and supporting fish farming to encouraging vegetable cultivation and providing additional income opportunities for women and rural households, the structure has become a valuable community resource.
Implemented under watershed development efforts by SOOVA with support from NABARD, this initiative demonstrates the importance of community participation in managing natural resources and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.
